FINALS
The Keystone
Dock Dogs were well represented October 7, 2007 in Nelsonville, Ohio for the Dockdogs National Championship Series Final
sponsored by the Outdoor Channel. On hand with their furry companions for the Big Air action was youth
handler of the year nominee Taylor Rohrbaugh with Hazel & Nestle and Todd Smoker with Evie. Extreme
Vertical competitors included Kevin Landis & Chip, Nina Helfer & Jazzie, Angie Jones & Nestle, and Scott
Conrad & Reggie.
The excitement mounted quickly when Hazel, Taylor’s
young Chocolate Lab, jumped confidently on every attempt, to secure the Novice Divisional win with an 11' 11" jump.
It was Taylor's day to handle chocolates as she was next up on the dock with Nestle for the Master Divisional
final. Her control and composure justified her Youth Handler of the Year Nomination as she successfully
managed Nestlé’s exuberance. A final jump of 21’ 1” placed them 7th
overall in the ranking
In the Senior Divison, a beautifully placed throw
on the first attempt by Todd led Evie out to the 19 foot mark. A second jump of 18’ 10” showed
some consistency, buy not quiet enough oomph as they finished 5th and just missed advancing to final four jump-off of
the Senior Divisional Final.
The Extreme Vertical Cadets excited the crowd as they raised
the bumper up from its five foot starting height. Kevin & Chip had clean grabs on their first
attempts all the way up to 5’ 8”. Two misses at 5’ 10” knocked them from contenting
for the title. Their perfection up to 5’ 8” earned them 2nd place over the other
teams that also achieved 5’ 8” because they didn’t have any misses up to that point. Nina Helfer &
Jazzie followed Kevin & Chip grabbing all the way up to 5' 8". They also missed at 5' 10" but
had other misses during the climb and ended up with 3rd Place.
The Top Gun teams brought
the event to its conclusion. Nestle & Reggie waited until the bar reached 6’8”
to enter the competition. Nestle struggled at 6’ 10”, but was good enough on his second attempt
to move up to 7 feet. Contact on the bumper on both jumps at this height lacked the force to dismantle
the bumper. 7' was not a concern for Reggie. I’m sure Reggie’s
#1 fan, Dodi, got rattled when he missed 7’ 2", but Scott, his handler, remained confident. Reggie
got it good on the 2nd attempt. 7' 2" proved to be Reggie’s limit
on this day as he no heighted at 7’ 4”. Angie and Nestle finished the competition in 5th
place while Scott and Reggie had Keystone’s 2nd highest finish on the day with a 2nd place tie.
